EU Calls on US to Clarify Position After Supreme Court Ruling
On Friday, the Supreme Court rules that Trump lacks authority under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs. In response, Trump signs an order implementing a 10% global tariff under a different law and later announces plans to raise it to 15%, calling the justices who ruled against him “a disgrace to the nation.”
In its Sunday statement, the European Commission requests “full clarity” on Trump’s stance, stressing that the current situation conflicts with the promise of “fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial” trade outlined in the EU-US joint statement from August 2025. “The Commission will always ensure that the interests of the European Union are fully protected. EU companies and exporters must receive fair treatment, predictability, and legal certainty,” the statement reads.
The EU emphasizes that its goods should not face tariff increases “beyond the clear and all-inclusive ceiling previously agreed.” “Tariffs are taxes, driving up costs for both consumers and businesses, as recent studies clearly confirm,” the Commission adds.
Trump has repeatedly accused other countries of “ripping off” the US and argues that broad tariffs are necessary to protect domestic manufacturers and counter what he describes as unfair trade practices. He has also used trade measures as leverage, threatening additional tariffs on European nations opposing his Greenland annexation plan.
