UK PM calls Trump’s Greenland tariffs “completely wrong”

(MENAFN) Britain’s prime minister on Saturday dismissed US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on eight European countries over Greenland, saying that targeting allies with trade penalties is “completely wrong.”

In an official statement, Keir Starmer reaffirmed London’s stance that Greenland belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark and that decisions about its future rest with the people of Greenland and Denmark themselves.

He also stressed the shared responsibility of NATO members in safeguarding the Arctic, stating: "We have also made clear that Arctic security matters for the whole of NATO and allies should all do more together to address the threat from Russia across different parts of the Arctic."

Starmer further criticized the use of tariffs in this context, arguing that penalizing allies for actions linked to collective NATO security efforts is unjustified. He said such measures are "completely wrong," adding that the UK intends to raise the issue directly with the US administration, according to reports.

His comments followed Trump’s announcement earlier on Saturday that the United States would introduce new tariffs on imports from eight European countries starting February 1, with rates set to increase sharply in June. The US president cited “national security” concerns related to Greenland as the reason for the move.

Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has increasingly attracted attention from Washington due to its strategic Arctic location and vast mineral resources, alongside reported concerns about growing Russian and Chinese activity in the region.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States must acquire Greenland to protect its national security and prevent Russia or China from gaining influence over the territory. Both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any proposal to sell the island, consistently reaffirming Danish sovereignty.
