Canadian Analysts Warn of Potential U.S. Pressure
The outlet highlighted a viral column in the Globe and Mail newspaper, where the authors cautioned that Trump might resort to “military coercion” against Canada, recalling his earlier comments about turning it into the “51st US state.”
Adam Gordon, a former foreign affairs adviser, and academic Thomas Homer-Dixon argued that “nothing in international law protects Canada that shouldn’t have protected Venezuela.” They suggested that Trump could similarly attempt to use force to gain control of Canada’s oil resources.
The analysts also raised alarms about possible US involvement in fueling separatist sentiment in Alberta, Canada’s oil-rich province. Jeffrey Rath, one of the leaders of the separatist movement seeking to detach Alberta from Canada and join the US, told Bloomberg that he had already met with US State Department officials supportive of his initiative. He declined to reveal their identities, while the State Department refused to comment.
To counter such risks, Gordon and Homer-Dixon urged Ottawa to make it “clear” that any action against Canadian sovereignty would be “enormously costly” for the US. They recommended strengthening national service and homeland defense, creating a comprehensive drone strategy, and rapidly expanding domestic defense industries.
