NATO Allies Side with Denmark Against US Greenland Claims

(MENAFN) Denmark, together with six NATO partners, issued a collective declaration on Greenland, urging respect for "sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders" following renewed demands from the United States for an American takeover of the island.

"Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland," leaders from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom emphasized in their statement.

The declaration stressed that Arctic stability remains a "key priority for Europe," noting that numerous European allies have expanded their presence, operations, and investments to safeguard the region.

"Security in the Arctic must therefore be achieved collectively, in conjunction with NATO allies including the United States, by upholding the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders. These are universal principles, and we will not stop defending them," the leaders underscored.

They further highlighted that the United States is an "essential partner in this endeavour, as a NATO ally and through the defence agreement between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States of 1951."

US President Donald Trump has consistently voiced his ambition to gain control of Greenland, a self governing territory under Denmark, and has not excluded the possibility of using military force.

Just one day after the US military campaign in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, Trump renewed his appeal for an American takeover of Greenland, citing US national security interests.
