Trump says Greenland is essential to US for national security
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he described the island as “so strategic” and claimed it is currently surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships. He added, “We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it,” when asked about potential US actions regarding the territory.
Trump also suggested that US control over Greenland would benefit broader Western security, noting that the European Union “needs us to have it” from a strategic perspective.
Greenland remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and has previously rejected any proposals suggesting a transfer of sovereignty.
