Ex-Trump official indicates at US plans to take over Greenland
Katie Miller, who previously served in senior communications roles during Trump’s first term and maintains close ties to the former president through her husband Stephen Miller, posted a map of Greenland overlaid with a US flag on social media, captioned simply: “soon.” The post did not include any official policy statement from Washington.
Trump first proposed buying Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, in 2019, a plan that Copenhagen and Greenland’s authorities immediately rejected. Since resuming office, Trump has again highlighted Greenland’s strategic importance for US national security, even hinting at the potential use of force. Denmark has responded by bolstering Arctic defenses and expanding military and civilian monitoring, viewing the moves as a direct challenge to its sovereignty.
Miller’s post drew a prompt reaction from Denmark’s ambassador to the US, Jesper Moller Sorensen, who emphasized that while Washington is seen as a “close ally,” full respect for the Kingdom of Denmark’s territorial integrity is expected.
Tensions over Greenland have escalated in recent weeks. In December, Trump stressed the US “needs” Greenland for its Arctic position and resources and appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, a supporter of incorporating the island into the US, as a special envoy, prompting Copenhagen to summon the US ambassador.
The social media post coincided with the US military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, an action Caracas rejects as a pretext for regime change. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen urged Washington to de-escalate and respect international law amid the unfolding situation.
